To ensure that an electrical device is safe, it must undergo a number of tests. In general, all electrical equipment should perform the correct tests in the following order: visual inspection, earth continuity test, insulation resistance test, leakage current test, and residual current tests.
These tests differ depending on whether the electrical device is grounded or double insulated. The main grounded appliances are dishwashers, washing machines, irons, refrigerators, electrical machines, drills, saw benches and bench grinders.
A residual current device is used to increase electrical safety. It is designed to cut power when the residual current reaches or approaches a preset value. For devices designed to protect people, this figure is up to 30 milliamperes.
Visual inspection is performed on all types of equipment and approximately 90 percent of defects are found with this inspection. Then, necessary tests are performed depending on whether the equipment is grounded or double insulated. The most potentially dangerous electrical devices are grounded devices.
